Missing is a portrait of the sorrow of grief and the serenity of overcoming it. The opening old-timey piano refrain begins like a reminder in a picture frame. Stabbing hits and a steady kick interject to interrupt the reverie, ultimately ending up where it started. A trumpet laments lyrically “come back to me” intermittently, that crushing reminder of the loss. Transformative new melodies emerge in the ebb and flow of the beats, a high bass countermelody building up the energy and hope, before the song drops off again. The struggle to carry on is emboldened to the end with an anthemic unison melody, over which the trumpet finally cries out a solo, a defiant expression of feeling: denial, frustration, and anger, and the fight for acceptance that results in simply, Missing. The song balances the longing for a lost loved one with the renewal of hope as the healing slowly develops. Sonically it treads from the lo-fi aesthetic towards uplifting dance beats, broken by ambient breaks cyclically, new melodies blossoming hope with each revolution.
