Boris Vian Tribute Concert

Studio 17, 2425 Manitoba St, Vancouver, BC

A tribute to Boris Vian, the French polymath: writer, poet, musician, singer, translator, critic, actor, inventor and engineer. While today he is remembered primarily for his novels, my trio and I will be presenting his jazz compositions in a very special musical performance as a part of the gallery's exhibition opening. Vian was fascinated with jazz: he served as liaison for, among others, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis in Paris, wrote for several French jazz-reviews (Le Jazz Hot, Paris Jazz) and published numerous articles dealing with jazz both in the United States and in France.

Sentimental Journey: Musical Memories of WWII

Vancity Theatre, 1181 Seymour Street, Vancouver, BC

Presented by Michael van den Bos with an integrated live performance by The Angela Verbrugge Quartet MAD | Vancity Theatre Event

Show Time for Victory!

The syncopated rhythms and poignant melodies generated by the entertainment industry during World War II helped rally patriotism and Allied actions in the global fight against fascist foes. To celebrate the musical achievements that inspired audiences during the war years, film scholar Michael van den Bos presents a rousing revue of clips from World War II-era Hollywood movies that boosted morale and offered much needed escapist fare to home front civilians and servicemen on the front lines.

Featured in this program are some of the brightest Hollywood stars of the 1940s who did their part for the war effort in spirited song and dance, including The Andrews Sisters, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Rita Hayworth, Gene Kelly, Glenn Miller, Carmen Miranda, and The Voice . . . Frank Sinatra.

Interwoven with the film clips is a live performance by vocalist Angela Verbrugge , singing period pop and jazz songs of love, loss, longing and hope that comforted and encouraged the Greatest Generation. Accompanying Angela are Josh Roberts on guitar, Anita Eccleston on trumpet, Louis Rudner on bass, and Nick James on drums.

Vancouver-based bandleader Anita Eccleston's acrobatic voice and lyrical trumpet style honour the traditions of jazz, often melding familiar and new in both her large and small ensembles. Her ongoing project showcases original songs and jazz favourites highlighted by instrumental improvisation, sweet sultry vocals, and sweeping cello counterpoint. Her growing passion for jazz ukulele has her adopting a new role as a rhythm player. Her major influences include Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse, Diana Krall, Miles Davis, Chet Baker and Madeleine Peyroux. Anita's energetic performances incorporate many styles from jazz to soul, funk, reggae, pop, and the blues.

Her latest album, More Trumpet (December 2016) is a collection of traditional jazz standards, showcasing her distinctive vocal stylings alongside her playful trumpeting. She pays tribute to the timeless songs that she connected with as a budding musician.

In 2011, Eccleston released her debut Jazz EP, a collection of recordings from her early beginnings in Montreal at McGill University. Anita was featured in 2012 in a performance for CBC Radio One’s program Hot Air. She released her Trio EP in 2013, and in 2014 completed her long-awaited original LP, So It Goes. The full-length album explores her eclectic tastes in music. Her music is available for purchase and streaming online.

Anita toured BC and Eastern Canada (highlighted by a show at Canadian Music Week in Toronto) in 2014. In 2015, she performed with her trio and was also a featured guest soloist with the Plastic Acid Orchestra at the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. The following year, she again performed with her 9-piece lineup on Granville Island for the Vancouver Jazz Fest. In April 2017, Anita showcased once again at Canadian Music Week accompanied by pianist Steve Amirault with assistance from Music BC.

Joining Canada's only all-female Mariachi band Las Estrellas de Vancouver, Eccleston traveled in the early summer 2017 to Tlaxcala, Mexico to attend workshops and perform at the first ever Tlaxcala Women's Mariachi Festival alongside groups from Mexico, Columbia and the USA. In July 2018 they were invited to play at the 5th Annual Women's Mariachi Festival in Los Angeles and performed alongside Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea of LA, Las Adelitas of London, UK and famed mariachi vocalist Junko Seki from Japan. Las Estrellas were featured by Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre special presentation “¡Viva México!” in November 2019.

In March of 2019 Anita performed alongside the west coast’s most talented jazz women at Frankie’s Jazz Club in a presentation by Coastal Jazz called “Strong Women Strong Music,” as a benefit series for Atira Women’s Resource Society.

Anita is currently writing new music, teaching, performing, and advancing her mastery of the jazz ukulele.

Jazz Fest Jazz Trance

For me, Vancouver's jazz fest has always been a celebration of music to usher in summer with a concentrated infusion of improvisation, deep grooves and eclectic programming that stokes my imagination. It is my version of a vacation after a long year of teaching music lessons amidst my own gig schedule.

This year it has more meaning for me. Last year we lost the sweet release the festival brings as we waited, hunkered down, living in a strange limbo feeling both creative and crippled. I have used the time to write new songs that I am eager to share with you. To be able to come back to both performing and watching live music for this year's jazz festival as things have become safer finally and our world begins the shift into a semblance of normality is the greatest feeling I've felt in a very long time. I'm so grateful to Coastal Jazz for this incredible opportunity to emerge back into the world on their stage.

I've seen five shows live and have been taking in every single show offered from Coastal Jazz's inventive streaming focused incarnation this year, and I am so primed for tomorrow. Please tune in tomorrow LIVE at NOON (Pacific) to catch my show when it airs, join the chat and say hello, If you miss it, you can enjoy my presentation on your own time until at 11:59pm on July 6th. Rejuvenate your spirit with me and embrace your jazz fest jazz trance. Click here to watch: https://www.coastaljazz.ca/event/anita-eccleston/
